It was a pleasure to welcome Tania Spurling from England Athletics to present the awards at the summer presentation evening held at Bicester Rugby Club on Friday 11th October.
Steve Flynn, Club Chairman of Bicester AC, was able to eulogize on what had been a very successful summer of track and field athletics. The club competed in three different leagues during the Summer which included a welcome return to the Heart of England League. This turned out to a particularly successful league for Bicester as they won the under boy’s 11 competition.
The awards evening was not only about celebrating athletic excellence as there was a special prestigious award presented by English Athletics. Long standing club member Orla Welby was presented with the South East Regional Volunteer of the Year award for her contributions to coaching and helping not only at Bicester AC but within school athletics. Orla continues to compete for the club on a regular basis in under 20 competitions and her volunteering in club and school athletics also saw her recognized by Cherwell District Council. Another longstanding member Karen Magill won the club’s outstanding contribution of the year award for her work on the local coaching network.
In terms of the track and field awards it was a very good year for the younger age groups. The under 11 track athlete of the year was won by Thomas Kavanagh who had an outstanding summer of competition which included a club record equaling effort of 11.3secs in the 75 metres and the fastest time for an under 11 in the 600, metres (2 mins 1 secs). Josiah Edwards Giraud also competed well on the track but it was for his outstanding efforts in the field that won him under 11 boy’s field perforrmer of the year, which included a new club record mark in the vortex of 39.90 metres as well as the leading under 11 long jump of 3.67 metres.
The only other men’s club record that was broken in 2013 was the under 15 triple jump record. With an excellent national grade 2 mark of 11.80 metres Connor Wilce, who was also outstanding in the long jump during the summer, collected the under 15 field performer of the year award. Annie Jankowiak was a very talented cross contry performer in the youth but she is beginning to develop into a fine middle distance and recorded a national grade 4 43.16secs in the 300 metres which earned her under 15 girl track performer of the year. Another club record fell in the under 13 girl’s 1500 metres as Amy Gould set a new mark of 5 mins 49 secs which earned her the equivalent award for the under 13 age group. Holly Griffiths Brown enjoyed an extraordinary summer of achievements over a range of disciplines and she ended the year as the leading under 13 girl competitor in no less than 4 events. However it was in the high jump where she was recognized as under 13 field performer of the year achieving a national grade 4 and new club record mark of 1.28 metres.
Jess Cherry collected an impressive set of national grade under 17 girl awards during the summer which included a new club record mark in the shot of 8.84 metres(grade 3), 9.54 metres in the triple jump (grade 4) and 25.15metres in the discus (grade 4) earning her under field performer of the year for her age category. Under 17 girl club athlete of the year Nerissa Starrett made a welcome return to the sport equaling the long standing under 17 high jump record of 1.45m as well as recording a national grade 4 performance of 10.07 metres in the triple jump. Brother Bevan made it a family double by winning the under 17 boy’s club award. There were two graded performances in the under 13 boys’s long jump which helped Tom Couzens to the under 13 boy’s field performer of the year and Harvey Attrill to the under 13 boy’s club performer of the year. And Yolanda Martin (under 15 field performer of the year) was also a grade 4 performer as she leapt 4.55m to lead the under 15 girl rankings in that event and Jack Clemence (under 17 field performer) who threw a grade 4 mark of 30.28m.
