There was an excellent turnout at the Bicester AC summer awards presentation evening held at Bicester Rugby Club. It was ironic that in the year Great Britain hosted the Olympics, the track and field season would be so truncated. In spite of this there were still many fine performances deserving of merit.

The Under 17 track and club male athlete award went to Edward Burgess. Burgess was a national grade 1 performer at the 100 metre hurdles and his finest performance of the summer came in the English Schools Championships where he was just pipped for a medal in the final of the hurdles. His club athlete award was earned on the back of his contribution to coaching the younger athletes and mentoring many of them in competitions.

It was an excellent season for the Under 11 girls and Holly Griffiths Brown earned the field athlete of the year for that category on the back of some excellent overall performances in the league events with two overall second places out of 50 athletes which included a 3.62 metres long jump. Not to be outdone the Under 11 boys field event award went to Tom Couzens who demonstrated his fine all round talent with a 38.52 metres throw in the howler and a 3.77metres long jump.

It was a good Summer for the Cherrys’ with Jess wining the Under 15 field event award and Jake winning the Under 13 award. Jess broke a long standing club record by putting the shot for a mark of 8.91 metres (national grade 3) and this was accompanied by a grade 4 effort in the triple jump of 10.06 metres. Not to be outdone brother Jake produced a 23 metres javelin effort as well as throwing the discus 18.66 metres.

The Under 13 girl track performer of the year was Rhiannon Penfold who achieved national grade 4 performances in 4 track events. Connor Wilce had a superb Summer in the long jump and this was good enough to earn him the male Under 15 field performance of the year award. Mark Smith’s summer was ruined by injury but he was still able to produce national grade performances in the 100, 400 and 800 metres which earned him the Under 15 track performer of the year.
