Holly Griffiths Brown was Bicester AC’s star at the ever popular Sandra Luke Memorial competition held on Sunday 2nd June at Horspath. Athletes earn star awards for their selected three events with 5 stars being the highest attainment. Griffiths Brown was an excellent 3rd in a strong field for the U12 Girls competition earning 5 stars. Whilst gaining good points in her two strong events, the 800 metres (2m 48.5s) and long jump (3.58m), she showed burgeoning talent in the 100 metres clocking 14.42s which was a national grade 4 performance. Other good performances in the U12 Girls were from Lauren Garside, Lucy Stowell and Masie Silvester.
Tom Couzens has made a fine start to the season and he showed further glimpses of his potential with a 5 star performance for 4th place in the U12 Boy’s competition. Although he has not raced in many 800 metre distances this season, his time of 2m 43.8s represented a considerable advancement on last season. This was supplemented by another solid long jump performance (4.15m), which is a national grade 4 performance, and a very pleasing first go at the javelin (18.45m). William Sims also came a creditable 14th in this age group.
There were two Bicester 5 star performers in the U10 Girl’s event. Amelia Cox just missed on a podium finish in 4th place but her 800 metre effort of 3m 06.31s was some 7secs faster than last year’s time and her 75 metre time of 12.61 secs was also an improvement on previous efforts. Millie Couzens was the other 5 star performer as she finished 7th. This included a very good long jump performance of 3.58m.
There was some pleasing progress from Ellis Griffiths Brown in the under 10 boy’s event where he finished 7th including big improvements in the 75 metres (12.14secs) and long jump (2.88m).
Thomas Kavanagh was the sole Bicester athlete in the U11 Boys finishing is 12th place.
There was further success in the under 9 girl’s ten step competition with Emelia Sims taking 2nd place in a strong field and earning 9 steps.
