Bicester AC had a record turnout in the first round of the Chiltern League Cross Country held last Saturday at Horspath. No less than 17 athletes started for Bicester with 5 of those new runners.
However it was established athlete, Max Nicolle, who stole the plaudits. Nicolle competed in the under 15 boy’s race and produced his ever best ever cross country run and highest Chiltern league placing with 3rd out of the 86 strong field. Nicolle clocked an impressive 13 mins 02secs for the 4,400 metre course. Samuel Worfolk also nosed into a first half position with a strong run for 41st (14mins 46secs). Edward Jolliffe produced a respectable clocking of 15mins 12secs for 51st place and the team was completed by newcomer Michael Alborzpour who finished a respectable 63rd (15mins 49secs).
There was an excellent debut run from Oliver Conway who finished in the top quarter of the under 13 boy’s race placing 25th in the 102 strong field. His time for the 2,900 metre course was 10mins 52secs. His performance was matched by Owen Stocker in the under 11 boy’s race run over a 2,100 metre course. Stocker finished a fine 25th in the 74 strong field with 8mins 31secs. However he was strongly challenged by Django La Porte who was just 19secs down in 33rd. Final Bicester counter in this race was Kyle Rayson 53rd in 9mins 51secs.
Bicester’s best performance in the girls’ races was from Amelia Cox. Enjoying something of a resurgence in the distance races, Cox was 32nd in the under 15 girl’s race with 14mins 17secs over the 3,500 course. Bicester’s only other finisher in this event was newcomer was Lucy Tear who plugged on gamely for 83rd (17mins 17secs).
Bicester’s best turnout in the girls’ races was in the under 13 event (2,100 metres). All of the Bicester finishers were covered by just 37secs. And it was another newcomer, Lucy McGrath who had the honour of leading the team home placing 47th with 12 mins 26secs. Just 2 places behind her was Anna Joliffe who was 49th with 12mins 40secs. Amy Willis finished 60th (12mins 53secs) with the team completed by Imogen Cox who was 65th (13mins 3secs).
Bicester has two competitors in the under 11 girl’s race (2,100 metres) with Alanna O Neill 30th in 9mins 49secs and newcomer Zofia Conway 42nd in 10mins 46secs). And Simon Worfolk competed for the club in the senior men’s race (8,900 metres) finishing 270th (40mins 12secs) in the 400 strong field.
Away from the Chiltern League Ben West produced a fine effort in the Cross Challenge held in Cardiff. West finished a strong 8th with 16mins 22secs in the 45 strong under 17 race held over 5,560 metres.
