The Oxford Mail Cross Country League event held at Horspath on Sunday 10th January doubled up as the Oxfordshire County Championships. Bicester AC featured well in five of the other age groups with top ten finishers in each of these age categories and a county champion.
Ben West continued his quite outstanding first season in cross country with a magnificent win in the under 15 male category in the Oxfordshire County Championships where he clocked 16mins 26secs for gold. West finished 45 secs in front of the next finisher in his age group and is now well in the lead in the overall under 15 league standings after three events. The other Bicester finisher in this age group was Tom Couzens who was 21st in the combined in the under 15/17 event. Tom Gould also competed in this event and he placed 24th.
Millie Couzens opened her account for the season in the Oxford Mail with a fantastic 2nd in the under 13 girl’s race, out of the 45 finishers, clocking 12mins 4secs for the 2000 metre course. She was supported by Lucy Watts who was 17th and Freya Smith in 29th place with the team finishing 5th.
There was another excellent team performance by the under 13 boys as they finished 3rd team on the day and retained their overall 2nd in the team standings with just two events to go. Max Nicolle has placed well in all of races he has contested this year and once again he ran a fine race for a podium finish in 3rd place clocking 11mins 30secs for the 2000 metre course. Samuel Worfolk once again confirmed that he is one of the most improved Bicester athletes this winter and he ran well for 14th place. The team was completed by Edward Jollife in 18th with Bicester’s other finisher Freddie Taylor in 23rd.
There was good a turnout of girls in the under 11’s race. Georgia Usher finished 5th again and this leaves her well placed in 5th place in the overall standings. Bella Couzens, who was making her Oxford Mail bow for the season, placed a fine 12th two places in front of Lottie Doherty who was 14th. Anna Couzens also ran well for 16th and other Bicester placings in this event were Molly Doherty 24th, Isla Bohannon 47th and Rosie Newton 48th.
The under 15/17 girl’s team had a tough time in their event with the team placing 8th on the day. Once again Amy Gould led the team home in 10th place with a 19mins 9secs clocking which still leaves her at overall 4th in the under 15 standings after 3 events. Next home was Molly Action who was 32nd (21mins 25secs) with other Bicester finishers Libbie Nicklin 42nd (22mins 59secs), Holly Hunter 47th (24mins 52secs), Lauren Garside 48th (25mins 09secs) and Bethany Liversidge 52nd (27mins 25secs).
Sam Lawson ran a cracking debut race in the under 11 boy’s race placing 7th. Bicester’s most consistent performer in this event has been Michael Cadle and he was 10th with Bicester’s other finishers Harry Rendell 30th and Ben Groves 43rd. There were just three Bicester runners in the mixed under 9 event with Holly Keeble placing 19th, Hollie Offord 24th and Katie Groves 33rd.
