Two Bicester AC athletes, Kyle Rayson and Robson Matthews, were selected for the Oxfordshire under 15 boy’s team for the UK Sportshall final held recently at Fenton Manor, Stoke. A 3rd member of the team, Lincoln Jones, had been a Bicester AC athlete for the whole of the Winter season and had only very recently left to join Radley AC. Counties qualify for the final competing in regional heats and the Oxfordshire under 15 boy’s team was the only Oxfordshire team to qualify for the national final. This was a significant achievement as this was the first appearance by an Oxfordshire under 15 boy’s team in the national final since 2005.
The team of 6 Oxfordshire athletes competed superbly in the final to achieve an excellent 2nd out of the eight competing teams just 18 points adrift of the winning Lancashire team who won with 1,188 points. In doing so they overturned form with Surrey who had beaten them in the regional final.
Athletes who had competed for Bicester throughout the 2022/23 season made up 50% of the scoring Oxfordshire team. Lincoln Jones took a superb bronze in the standing triple jump with a best of 7.59m. Jones also combined with Kyle Rayson to take 3rd place in the 8 lap paarlauf clocking 1mins 30.4secs.
Jones and Rayson also scored well in the – all rounder competition comprising some 60 athletes. Jones finished in equal 6th with 270 points just ahead of Rayson who was 8th with 266 points. They were Oxfordshire’s two highest scorers with Bicester’s Robson Matthews also performing well for 17th (234 points). In addition to his standing triple jump effort, Jones also finished in equal 6th place in the two lap event (21.3secs) with teammate Rayson back in equal 9th (21.4secs). Jones was also equal 6th in the speed bounce scoring 80 with Matthews also scoring 80 for equal 6th.
Rayson also performed superbly in the standing long jump finishing in a very strong equal 4th with a leap of 2.73m. Matthews also competed in this event finishing 10th with a best leap of 2.54m. And in the shot, Rayson was Oxfordshire’s highest finisher in 6th with a best putt of 9.83m. Matthew’s other event was in the 4 lap event where he finished 19th in 47.6secs.
